If you have decided to take control of your professional life, become your own boss and set up your own business operating and servicing vending machines, there are several things you need to consider before you dive in. When setting up your business operation, you first need to consider your locations. Where will you put the machines? It does little good to invest in the machines and realize that you have no place to put them. Nor can you simply stuff them anywhere.

You need to contract with people, companies or municipalities that own property to let you set up the machines in their space. Generally, they will allow you to do this for a nominal portion of the revenue off the top, but in certain situations, they may just let you put the machines on site for free.

Once you have set up contracts for locations, you need to decide what you want to sell, and find the vending machines best suited to facilitating your merchandise. There are three basic types of machines.

Snack, Candy and Ready-To-Eat Meal Machines

These machines are usually placed in the break rooms of offices and businesses, or in conveniently located areas of hotels and other types of public areas. These machines can sell a variety of food items, including all types of bagged snacks, chips, candy bars, prepackaged sandwiches and microwaveable meals. Usually, these machines are placed in spaces that are indoors, where there is a large workforce or a constant stream of customers congregating for long periods of time. These machines are not usually a good fit for outdoor applications aimed at pedestrian clientele.

Soft Drink Machines

These vending machines can be placed both indoors and outdoors, and they offer the best return for your money in most cases. Soft drink machines can be located in office parks, lobbies, shopping malls, outdoor plazas, parks and walking trails. Basically, anywhere people are moving and might be thirsty is a great bet.

Bulk Candy Machines

Bulk candy vending machines are probably the easiest machines to operate, and are a great way to either get yourself into the business, or to supplement your other operations. Bulk candy machines can be fully, 100% operated and supplied by you alone, meaning that you do not have to hassle with contracting for suppliers and distributors. In addition, this means that all the money your machines rake in is 100% yours.
